Filipino/a/x Artists to Host Grief Exhibit at Nuit Blanche Winnipeg

FILIPINO ARTISTS TO HOST GRIEF EXHIBIT AT NUIT BLANCHE WINNIPEG

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Monday, September 9, 2024

WINNIPEG, MB – Please run the following public service announcement until September 28, 2024:

The public is invited to attend UNDAS - a celebration of grief through the lens of the Filipino diaspora.

This exhibition consists of work from Filipino Manitoban artists ranging from installation, film, music and print art.

The showcase’s concept came to event producer and local filmmaker MC de Natividad when she was making her upcoming narrative short, “griePH”, which explores the journey of a Filipinx (non-binary Filipino person) and their experience with sudden loss, grief and inability to cope. When discussing her latest work with other Winnipeg Filipino artists, she realized they also had work related to grief and that Nuit Blanche Winnipeg, a free nighttime exploration and celebration of contemporary art held in Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District and Downtown, would be a great avenue to exhibit their work.

“I am confident our project fits perfectly with the theme of "illuminate the night" as it encourages us to reflect on grief in whatever form it manifests and reimagine that energy into shining lights that continue to guide us into new spaces. I also believe this presentation facilitates important conversations about grief that people often shy away from but in a safe space and comforting environment,” said de Natividad.

The event is named after the Philippine tradition of "UNDAS", a combination of "All Souls' Day" and "All Saints' Day", where the community gathers to celebrate the lives of saints and departed loved ones. de Natividad also felt like the exhibition could highlight works by Filipino artists.

“This showcase is a great opportunity to expose the public to aspects of the Filipina/o/x community, including some of our cultural practices that are often not discussed, as our art and ethnic group has long been underrepresented.”

The event is pay-what-you-may, and all proceeds will go towards the artists and the exhibition’s costs.
